Our Story
From a small community idea to Bowen Island's most beloved re-use-it store
The Knick Knack Nook was born from a simple belief: that a community can take care of itself when given the right tools. What started as a modest initiative to fund a local playground has grown into a thriving hub of generosity, sustainability, and community spirit that has touched every corner of Bowen Island.
Our Journey
The Beginning
The Nook opens its doors in a small space on Mount Gardner Road. A group of passionate volunteers, led by founding members Nancy Schaper and Carol Stirling, launch the store with a mission: turn donated treasures into funds for community projects.
First Scholarship Awarded
The Nook awards its first scholarship to a graduating Bowen Island Secondary School student. The modest $500 grant marked the beginning of what would become a pillar of the Nook's mission - investing in the island's youth.
Silent Auction Launches
The monthly Silent Auction is introduced, giving local organizations a direct way to benefit from the Nook's community of donors and shoppers. Each month, a different organization receives all proceeds from specially selected items.
1 Million Dollars Raised
The Nook reaches a staggering milestone: over $1,000,000 raised for Bowen Island priorities. This achievement cements the Nook's reputation as one of the most impactful small community organizations on the island.
New Building Campaign Begins
After 15 years of faithful service, the original Nook building is showing its age. The community launches an ambitious fundraising campaign to build a new, accessible, and functional space that will serve Bowen Island for generations to come.
From Our Founders
When we opened the Nook, we had no idea how much the community would embrace it. Bowen Islanders are incredibly generous - they don't just donate items, they donate their time, their energy, and their love for this place.
The Nook isn't just a store. It's proof that when a community comes together with purpose, extraordinary things happen. Every item sold is a vote for the kind of Bowen Island we want to live in.
